No-vem-ber-fest (n)
A raucous autumnal celebration that typically emphasizes
merrymaking and the consumption of beer and fried turkeys.
Novemberfest was invented in the fall of 2001 by a consortium of New
Englanders searching for a reason to deep fry large quantities of turkeys
and yet retain the hearty German devotion to binge drinking in October.
[Middle English Novembre, from Old French, from Latin November, ninth month,
from novem, nine + Fest, festival (from Middle High German v‘st, from Latin
festum, from neuter of festus, festive).] |
