His-to-ry (n)
Novemberfest was the dream of three young New Englanders intent on creating
another event devoted to the mass consumption of our friend Mr. Turkey.
After a planned Oktoberfest party was scratched due to scheduling
difficulties, the foundation was laid for some turkey gorging of epic
proportions. The inaugural event was held in
Middletown, CT, and began humbly, resulting in the frying and consumption
of only 2 turkeys, and two drained kegs. Pictures from the maiden
Novemberfest voyage are HERE.
The hype swirling around the second coming of Novemberfest was substantial.
The party drew attendees from as far away as Washington DC, and set the
stage for a national event. When it was all said and done, Novemberfest 2
established several modern-day records for fried turkey consumption. Over
the course of the evening, 6 turkeys were fried and devoured, as well as one egg and two corn dogs. Pictures of Novemberfest 2 are HERE.
Attendance for Novemberfest 3 dropped, hampered by a 2000 mile move, west to Arizona.
Still, the most fashionable people turned up for the epic 3rd season of turkey celebration,
and the first annual Johnny B Challenge™. Although the move to Arizona
diminished attendance, it has positioned novemberfest as a premier destination event. According
to sources for the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, Novemberfest 4 in 2004 will rank behind only the
Fiesta Bowl™ in terms of revenue generated for the state of Arizona,
Novemberfest 4 smashed all previous notions of what an event anchored by
fried turkey and cold beer could be. Patrons came from the four corners
of the nation, as far as New Hampshire, Florida, and northern and
southern California. Massachusetts, Illinois, Rhode Island, Missouri,
Connecticut, New York, Washington DC, and Texas were also represented.
Novemberfest 4 set records for most out-of-towners to crash on the floor
(22), most turkeys consumed (7), most airport trips (15), and most vans
crashed (1).
